The back up ring is a plastic or rubber ring that prevents the O-ring from entering the gap. When high pressure is applied to the O-ring, its soft rubber material may be forced into the gap, causing the O-ring to extrude. A hard back up ring material will prevent the O-ring material from flowing into the gap, preventing premature failure. The plastic back up ring is solid flat cut, scarf cut, spiral cut.

The back up ring is a rigid ring that holds the elastomeric seal or plastic connection in its design shape and in the correct position. The back up ring is typically used with O-rings, lip seals and reciprocating shaft seals. They are also used to connect pipe connections of two different materials – usually a flexible material and a rigid material.
