Oil seals are playing an essential and very important role in almost all industries. Basically, these seals provide an optimal performance of all the industrial products and mechanical equipment. PTFE seals are also one of the most important and popular oil seals. PTFE seals manufacturers have manufactured them to use in high pressure appliances.
Furthermore, these seals provide extreme productivity and efficiency for applications with massive temperature. They actually retain lubrication and can block impurities in the bearing system even in high temperatures.
The seals manufacturers produce these seals in many different shapes and sizes. Additionally, the sizes and shapes of PTFE seals totally depend on the shaft diameter of the machines.
PTFE seals are also popular as the name of Teflon®. These seals had actually discovered by Roy Plunkett on 6th April 1938. He was an employee of DuPont. In fact, he was trying to produce a new chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant.
So, this man was using hydrochloric acid and tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). Roy was making experiment to create chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant, tetrafluoroethylene which was in his experiment bottle stopped flowing.
Just like Penicillin, the discovery of Roy Plunkett also has left many useful and favorable effects. During his experiment he found that there was a coating within the bottle. The bottle which Roy was using, he found it opened and there he got a specific slippery substance.
In this way, he had discovered polytetrafluorethylene. The short form of polytetrafluorethylene is PTFE. Later after almost 3 years, this material had patented by Roy Dupont’s subordinate company. They assigned it a new trade name Teflon. But this patent has removed and now there are several different PTFE seals manufacturers all around the world.
Hence, this happy and unbelievable accident has led us to the construction of a wide and useful industry. Today this discovery of Roy Plunkett is serving almost all industries.
PTFE seals has created by using Polytetrafluoroethylene material. Furthermore, Polytetrafluoroethylene is extremely amazing polymeric material. It has several extraordinary features like,
Basically, PTFE is very low-cost material for high-performance seals. Additionally, PTFE seals are also famous with another name, Teflon® seals. In fact, Teflon® is famous for its heat-resistant and non-stick features. Manufacturers are using PTFE seals in almost all industries. Such as,
PTFE seals manufacturers have designed PTFE seals for high temperature applications. They sometimes call them
When we use seals for high temperature, PTFE seals provide wider service range in comparison to elastomeric seals. Moreover, PTFE seals also an ideal choice for the vast array of media that the seal encounters and also for shaft speed.
Generally, the material of polytetrafluoroethylene is extremely resistant for all acid and chemicals.
So, PTFE seals are perfect for sealing all types of chemicals and acids. PTFE seals are also best choices for dry applications and for corrosive and harsh media because of self-lubricating properties.
PTFE seals manufacturers are preferring these seals because they help to reduce friction. The friction which occurs by contacting the PTFE lip and sealing surface (shaft). Furthermore, these seals also consume less power and have longer life in comparison to elastomer lip.
Seals manufacturers have produced them with the blend of many fillers and a virgin PTFE. These fillers are very helpful to reduce the operating temperature. And they also provide many physical properties during service which applications need.
Moreover, with the features of reducing temperature and friction these seals will provide longer life.
The additional properties of PTFE materials mean we generally know this material as non-stick coating for special cookware. Because in cookware the heat resistance and inertness have special importance. Although it was an accident discovery but has become an essential need in today’s modern industry.
Moreover, the features or properties which has make PTFE so useful and beneficial are:
So, because of these properties PTFE seals designers are widely making use of PTFE seals.
PTFE seals manufacturers select all the materials by considering the benefits and drawbacks of materials. In fact, there are hundreds of several different types of materials of PTFE with a huge variety of fillers.
Moreover, the most common fillers which manufacturers use with PTFE materials are,
All the above materials also have many different kinds of properties. In addition, these materials are suitable for several different kinds of service conditions and application. But all these fillers with PTFE materials have improved resistance to deformation and wear.
PTFE seals manufacturers states that when we use PTFE seals without these fillers, PTFE seals provide lower coefficient of friction in comparison to a filled PTFE material. So, if we use unfilled PTFE materials, these seals will provide limited resistance to deformation and wear under load.
Although there are many advantages or pros which PTFE seals have. Moreover, we are trying to describe some of these.
Corrosion resistance:
PTFE is the best choice of material for those media which is not compatible with typical compounds of rubber or corrosive or caustic chemicals. It is one of the best corrosion resistant materials which manufacturers use in almost all industries. Furthermore, PTFE material is waterproof to all industrial chemicals and greatly corrosion resistant. Hence, PTFE seals manufacturers are using PTFE material in such conditions.
Capabilities of wide temperature range:
The temperature range ability of PTFE is -325°F to +500°F. This is actually beyond the range of almost all elastomers. PTFE is best choice for high temperature conditions and cryogenics like, combustion processes, oven. Other ordinal materials can rule out in such very high temperatures.
In fact, very low temperatures can result the most rubber compounds to harden which are not proper for many applications. But PTFE material are also best in such conditions. Moreover, PTFE remains pliability and flexural even at cryogenic temperature.
Long shelf-life:
Those application which need extended or long-life service, PTFE is the best choice in corrosive environments. On the other hand, on the other hand, some elastomers may result the best but are not suitable for many years. So, for Long shelf-life PTFE seals manufacturers use PTFE seals.
Furthermore, PTFE materials also have some additional benefits in comparison to rubber compounds.
Here are 5 drawbacks of PTFE seals
Furthermore, PTFE seals manufacturers describe that PTFE is not suitable for extremely high temperatures like it can melt at 326 Celsius.
